If you’re 70-1/2 or older, you can donate up to $108,000 per tax year directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to charities like Gazelle Foundation

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD), otherwise known as IRA charitable rollovers or IRA gifts, are a great way to support our lifesaving work by allowing your dollars to go further: QCDs may be excluded from your taxable income and qualify towards your required minimum distribution (RMD).

Benefits of making an IRA gift

QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution for the year. If you have to take your required minimum distribution but you don't want or need the funds, QCDs are a good way to distribute the amount out of the IRA. As an added benefit, you'll avoid paying income tax on your gross income up to $108,000.

Are there any QCD restrictions?

Per IRS regulations, QCDs cannot be made to a donor advised fund (DAF). A QCD can be made to your sponsoring 501(c)(3) organization if there are programs that you can fund outside of your DAF. Such purposes include general support for the charity or for other programs they may maintain outside of their role as a DAF sponsor.

How to make an IRA qualified charitable distribution

Here are the steps to take to make a gift from your IRA:

• Contact your IRA administrator and instruct that person to transfer funds to the charity you designate.

• Help us credit your gift and thank you by having your IRA administrator include your full name and mailing address on the gift. Also, have your administrator note that the transfer is an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution. We do not encourage restricted gifts. 

If you'd like to make a QCD gift, your financial institution should make the check out to "Gazelle Foundation" and identify you as the donor by name and address.

When you donate in honor or celebration of someone, we send a tribute certificate or e-Card, letting them know about your gift. If you prefer, you have the option to remain anonymous.

Once we’ve processed your tribute gift, we’ll send you an acknowledgment letter that serves as your tax receipt.

There are a few simple ways you can make a tribute donation:

• Online: Make a Tribute Gift via credit or debit card is quick and easy. You have the option of sending an e-Card to your gift recipient’s inbox, or we will mail them a physical tribute certificate. Making your tribute gift online minimizes our costs of processing and postage, and also lessens our collective carbon foot print. You have the option to remain anonymous.

Please note that a minimum of $10 is required per tribute.

How long will my tribute donation take to process?

When you make a donation in honor of someone, it can take up to four weeks for your tribute notification letter to arrive in your gift recipient’s mailbox. If you’d like notification of a tribute donation to get to your recipient more quickly, email us directly at info@gazellefoundation.org

Donation processing tends to get busier at the end of the year. If you’re looking to have a physical gift letter delivered by December 25th, we recommend you submit your tribute gift by December 2nd.

Will my gift recipient see how much I donated in their honor?

No. When you make a tribute donation, the amount of the gift only appears on the acknowledgment letter/tax receipt we send directly to you. Your gift recipient receives a separate letter or confirmation that does not include the amount.
