Manyoni - Water System #19

PROJECT KICKOFF

Construction on the Manyoni water system began February 15, 2015 with an estimated completion date of May 2015. You made this possible! The Manyoni water system is our 19th project overall. See the full list of projects here.

The Songa Commune of the Bururi Provence in Burundi has very limited clean water resources.  Currently the local inhabitants walk significant distances to obtain water from small springs and water pools that are not clean. The Project, located in the Taba and Muzamba Collines of the Songa Commune will consist of two collection chambers at two different sources, with a connecting pipeline. The project will consist of 2.7 kilometers of primary pipeline and ten tap stands.

The project will serve approximately 1200 people from the general population, including the Manyoni Primary school, Pentecost church, and Manyoni market.  This project will have a profound impact on the population’s health and well-being.

Project Schematics

Safer Communities

Water collection is a job traditionally done by women and children. Our clean water systems reduce the average distance traveled to access water from 4 miles to one-quarter mile. These shorter distances eliminated the dangers of traversing mountainous terrain, or near dangerous, untreated water sources. It also allows children to spend more time in school and provides women with time to develop trades or care for home and family.

Field Update: Interim Progress

Progress on the Manyoni water system is well underway. Jean Bosco Ndabaniwe, our project manager, reports progress is moving along well and the estimated completion date is on track. Milestones completed as of March 12, 2015 include:

  • 2 tap stands are complete

  • 2 collection chambers are complete

  • Digging trenches is around 1km

System Completion

The Musasa-Kirizi water system was completed on May 15, 2015, ahead of schedule. It serves 1,200 people.

It brings us, 1,200 people, closer to achieving our goal of providing every person in Burundi with clean water, the highest quality of life, and hope within reach.
