Nyabikona-Kivumu - Water System #12

Project Kick Off

Construction on the Construction on the Nyabikona-Kivumu water system began on January 14, 2014. See the full list of projects here.

Songa Commune of the Bururi Provence, has very limited clean water resources. Currently the local inhabitants walk significant distances to obtain water from small springs and water pools that are not clean. The Project, located in the Ndago Colline of the Songa Commune will collect water from a 1 liter-per-second source at Nyabikona.  A collection chamber will be built at the source and connect to three five-cubic-meter tanks and one ten-cubic-meter tank distributed over 2.25 kilometers of primary pipeline.  Thirteen tap stands will be distributed over 3.35 kilometers of distribution pipeline.

Thanks to our generous supporters, when completed this project will provide 1,500 local people clean water for life.

Field Update: Interim Progress

Thanks to your generosity construction crews in Burundi are still at work on the Nyabikona-Kivumu water system. The scope of work and schematic drawing gives the nuts and bolts but not the human impact.

The availability of clean water and the resulting improvements in health and education begin to reverse the cycle of poverty. According to the World Bank, returns on education investment are the largest in Africa over any other continent, and each additional year of schooling raises earnings by 11% for boys and 14% for girls.
