Get To Know Your Board Member: Michael Madison

Our Board Members are amazing! For over a decade, they have committed whole-heartedly to providing access to clean water for the people of Burundi. We want you to get to know the people who make the mission possible.

Michael Madison serves as Treasurer of our Board and has been involved with the Gazelle Foundation from day one. Michael has made numerous trips to Burundi and has a first-hand perspective of the life-changing value of clean water. He brings his real-world experience, can-do spirit, and passion for helping others to all of his endeavors, and we are glad he lends his talents to the vital work of the Gazelle Foundation.

How did you get connected to the Gazelle Foundation?

I ran in one of the first Run For The Waters (I think it was 2008) and then volunteered the next year. By 2010 I was working for both Gilbert's Gazelles and the Gazelle Foundation until it was clear the organization needed 100 percent of my time. I thoroughly enjoyed the six years I spent helping transform lives in Burundi and now excited to be in my second year as a member of the Board of Directors.

What motivated you to join the Board?

I believe that every board member both current and former along with all employees can draw a straight line from their involvement to Gilbert. He has a unique ability of persuasion in part because of his genocide survival but also because of decades of credibility. The Gazelle Foundation is an organization which consistently and effectively carries out the core mission. I'm honored and humbled to be able to play a role in continuing the mission.

How does your unique background and perspective help move the mission forward?

My six years as an employee of the organization in addition to numerous trips to Burundi give me unique perspective. Read more about Michael’s longstanding dedication to the Gazelle Foundation.

What accomplishments or projects keep you motivated and engaged in the Gazelle Foundation mission?

I have always had a unique appreciation and excitement for special events - especially Run For The Water. It's a joy to get people engaged in the organization's mission. There's been a great sense of pride and passion to connect individuals to our work regardless of the method. When the COVID threat subsides it is a hope to return the annual Burundi trips so that we can allow people to see and experience the work first-hand.

What do you like to do in your (limited!) spare time?

When I'm not working or at home with my family I can likely be found doing one of three things - running, hunting, or volunteering time for the Lubbock Mayor's Fitness Council.

What book is on your nightstand currently? Any recent favorites you'd like to share and why you like them?

Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne. My most recent favorite is American Buffalo by Steven Rinella, a magnificent read on the history of bison intertwined with a hunt in Alaska of one of the last remaining wild herds.

And recent favorite movies, music, or podcasts? Why are they favorites?

Most of our TV and music at home is geared towards our two small kids - a lot of Cocomelon and Disney Plus. My must-listen podcast library includes Meateater, Ryen Russillo, Simon Guillebaud, and Joe Rogan.
