Gilbert Tuhabonye Honored at HISTORYTalks 2026

By Abby Roedel

An inspiring tribute to the Gazelle Foundation's co-founder celebrates his extraordinary journey of survival, forgiveness, and hope.

Earlier this year, Gazelle Foundation co-founder Gilbert Tuhabonye was honored at HISTORYTalks 2026, a special event in Philadelphia produced by The HISTORY Channel and Comcast NBC to commemorate America's 250th anniversary.

The event brought together an extraordinary lineup of history-makers, including four former U.S. presidents—Barack Obama, Joe Biden, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton—alongside influential voices from entertainment, sports, and culture, including Michelle Obama, Jenna Bush Hager, Nicole Kidman, Tina Fey, Tom Brady, Jason Kelcy, and many others.

For Gilbert, the occasion held special meaning.

A Personal Connection

Gilbert shares a special connection with former President George W. Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, who helped open the HISTORYTalks program.

Jenna first met Gilbert through his Austin running group, Gilbert's Gazelles. President Bush later featured Gilbert in his book, Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants, recognizing his remarkable journey from Burundi and his contributions to the United States.

A Story of Survival, Forgiveness, and Hope

On October 21, 1993, Gilbert survived a brutal attack at his boarding school in Burundi, escaping a massacre that claimed the lives of many of his classmates and friends.

That day forever changed his life. But it did not define what he would become.

Gilbert went on to build a new life in the United States, becoming a celebrated runner, coach, author, and humanitarian. His experiences inspired him to co-found the Gazelle Foundation, turning his personal story of survival into a mission to bring clean water to communities in Burundi.

Today, that mission has helped bring clean water to more than 150,000 people, creating opportunities for healthier lives, stronger communities, and brighter futures.

The Foundation's work reflects Gilbert's enduring belief in the power of hope, human connection, and service. Read more about how clean water is transforming communities in Burundi.
